March 20-
*This is my shortened version of events, Jonathan can tell his much lengthier version* We were on the last run or two of the day and it was super spring skiing with slushy runs and sunshine. It was just Emily, Rylan, Kingston, Jonathan, and I since Hudson and Julienna went home earlier with Cam. Jonathan was showing off a little in the terrain park and was feeling good on his new skis. He went to do a jump and didn't land it and then his skis didn't pop off because they were adjusted to tight. He knew right away that something was right with his knee, but we didn't so we were laughing at the expert skier not sticking the landing. When we finally made it over to us, we wasn't putting any weight on his right leg. He said he messed it up really bad and we needed to get back home. We were close enough to the bottom of the run and car that he refused us to call the ski patrol because he did not want a toboggan ride! He managed to ski out on one ski and use his poles for support. Kingston was so worried and took charge of his other ski. We went to Joan and Cam's and made a quick plan to head back home. Joan drove Jonathan down with Kingston and Julienna and I packed up the rest of the stuff and the cats and met them back at our Boise house. Jonathan was pretty miserable the whole way down!
The next day I took him to the ortho urgent care and they did x-rays and got him in for an urgent MRI that night. We knew the gal doing the MRI so she let us sneek a peak and his ACL was gone and he tore his meniscus. Most of his pain was due to a tibial fracture where the ligament tore off the bone, so that pain could only be helped with time and healing (and some drugs). The urgent care had put him in a brace until we could see the surgeon, which was just a few days later. Jonathan obviously needed surgery but the doctor wanted him to get better extension before surgery so that he would have a better long term outcome. We didn't know how challenging that would be. His knee took months to finally get the swelling down and even attempt to work on extension. We iced it around the clock and he went to physical therapy.
Oh, and because it was his right leg, he couldn't drive so it was me and his mom shuttling him around to appointments!!! We even borrowed a wheel chair from Kelly so he could get around better at home (which everyone had fun with).
