Butterflies

August 19-
Kingston got a pretty fun gift for his birthday...it was a butterfly kit.  We started with 5 caterpillars and watched their transformation into butterflies.  It was really a neat process to get to see it up close and then we set them free.
The didn't do much as caterpillars.  We hardly saw them move, they would just be in different places around the cup.

It seemed like overnight they just doubled in size!  And then they made their way to the top of the cup and the next day formed into J's.

They hardened and started forming their chrysalis and after 3 days we were able to take the lid off and put them in the enclosure (one fell off so we just set it inside).

After a few days the outside of the chrysalis became transparent and we could see the colors of the butterfly's wings. If we bumped them at this stage they would start to shake really fast. We learned that it is a defense mechanism to scare away predators.

And finally, when we got home one day we heard some rustling around so we ran to see that our butterflies had emerged!  It was so exciting!!

After a few days (and 1 butterfly passing) we released them.  Kingston and Julienna loved that part!!
